Google Redefines the Clickable AdSense Area

Similar to what Google has been doing with ads in search results, they also now restricted the clickable area in AdSense (the kind of Google ads webmasters can include on their pages).

Instead of allowing a click to be triggered in a broad rectangle around the text – which used to include whitespace in that area – you must now click specifically on the underlined title or the colorized URL below the snippet.

With this change, Google wants to decrease accidental clicks. This has the short-term potential of lowering your AdSense revenues, but I think it’s a good move. Not only because it’s more ethical, but also because in the long run advertisers will be more likely to pay for services that work, and accidental clicks are a kind of system bug. I’m curious how much my AdSense income will drop, I guess all those of us using AdSense will see in a day or two.

Of course, these are not the only AdSense revenue sharing blog networks. There are others but the ones listed seem to be more promising with higher quality content. With the proliferation of such blogging sites, bloggers become more discerning and careful when joining since AdSense revenue does take sometime to build up to payout, so the site has to be reliable and not disappear after a couple of months.

Adsense Secrets - How To “Tweak” Your Ads

1.Ad Formats : “Dress” your ads for success!

How would you like your ads served? Banners? Skyscrapers? Rectangles? Squares? What about borders and background colors?

The choices can be overwh elming. Many people let Google decide for them-preferring to stick with the defau lt settings. Big mistake! From my own experience I can tell you that it’s like swapping a hundred-dollar bill for a ten-dollar one.

For almost one year I settled for just a tenth of what I could have been making - just because I didn’t bother to control the looks and placement of my AdSense ads.

The various ad formats, colors and their placement on the web page can be done in thousands of combin ations. You can literally spend hours every day experimenting with every possible combination. But you don’t want to, do you?

Let me give you a few ‘ground rules’ that have sky-rocketed the CTR’s on my top-grossing pages:

2.Don’t “Look” Like An Ad

People don’t visit your website for ads. They want good content.

If you make the ads stick out with eye-popping colors, images or borders, that makes them easy to recognize as ads - and people work extra hard to avoid them.

The same goes for ads that are tucked away in the top, bottom or some other far corner of the page. So easy to ignore!

If you want people to click, make the ads look like an integral part of your content.

Today’s visitors are blind to banners, mad at pop-ups, weary of ads and skeptical of contests and giveaways. So how do you win their confidence? Simple… Don’t make your ads look like ads!

Let’s begin by reviewing each of the different types of ad available from AdSense and explain ing their uses… then I’ll introduce you to a few simple choices that rocketed my CTRs to incredible heights.

3.Meet the AdSense Family

Google serves its ads in three flavors, with each of those flavors coming in a range of different shapes and sizes. It is very important to understand the differences between each of th ese ads. Some are ideal for particular locations. Some should never be used in certain locations. And some should never be used at all.

The sample page at www.google.com/adsense/adformats lets you see all of the different kinds of ads at once. It even has links to sample placements that demonstrate how the ads can be used.

For the most part, I’d recommend that you ignore those sample placements.

I’ll talk about location in more detail later in the post, but for now just bear in mind that many of the ads in the samples are just too out of the way to be noticed.

You can use them as a starting point if you want but you’ll save yourself a lot of time - and money - by taking advantage of the experience of myself and others, and following the recommendations here.

2. Colors

Google Introduces Referrals 2.0, More Choices to Making Money Online

AdSense blog mentioned about Referral 2.0 28th June 2007 but it wasn’t really make available for me until yesterday. First impression on Referral 2.0, a lot of referral ads!

Insert Referrals 2.0 into blog/websites

Google made Referral 2.0 navigates like a shopping cart, so it is really easy to understand even for a first timer. There are tones of categories to choose from, it advisable to gran only those that matches your niche and add category to cart.

Click on view product if you would like to see what these products are. Take a look at Performance on Network on the right side. It gives you ideas which amongst are performing good and likely to convert traffic for money. Chances are you will see most as NEW! Since Referral 2.0 is new.

Click on the product itself to see what ads you are getting and how much you are getting paid for each action. You can even make sure only some specific ads shows on your website but it will not always work if you have the Pick best performing ads checkbox clicked.

Verdict

Referral 2.0 gives publishers a lot of option; from choosing categories of ads until optimizing to choose which performs best and display them on websites. Its also contextual, therefore from my point of view, its more likely to convert to clicks compare to images.

However Referral 2.0 is still CPA (Cost per Action) ads. It requires actions (which likely to be purchasing) before one can earn from it. Unlike CPC ads, you earn per click but of course not as much as CPA. I’ve scanned through some of the payouts of these different referral products, they pay are not bad. Say if you earn 10cent from CPC, you probably earn 100x more from a successful CPA.

I think I already have enough ads on my page. The tricky part now is how give referral 2.0 a good spot yet don’t kill user experience.

Google AdSense alternatives

When it comes to contextual advertising to monetize your blog, Google AdSense like it or not, is still the one that rules them all. AdSense gives publishers the biggest pool of advertisers and often the highest pay-per-click.

However if you are looking for alternatives to AdSense, here are some options to consider. These options may work out to be even better than AdSense because there are other factors which may work in your favor. For example, low and mid traffic blogs would have an easier time reaching a minimum payout of USD10.00 instead of the USD100.00 payout for AdSense.

Some contextual advertising companies such as Bidvertiser allow you to screen advertisers so that no irrelevant advertiser appear on your blog just because of keyword ambiguity.

There are literally hundreds of alternatives to Google AdSense, some have come and gone but here is a list of those still existing. I have left out sites which did not have any payment details regarding minimum payment which I think is important and methods of payment which is important for international users.

I have also left out those with strange payment methods such as crediting a specially issued VISA account for payments. Also advertising companies that have high traffic requirements are not included, for example Clicksor which requires a minimum 5,000 visits per day.

It will take time to try them out to try them all out to find the one which performs best for your blog, so good luck.

AdSense Publishers Reporting Earnings Slump

I tend not to report too much on the ups and downs of AdSense performance because from day to day it is quite normal for a publishers earnings to go up or down (for a variety of reasons). However over the last 48 hours I’ve had emails from quite a few readers asking if I’d noticed a downturn in AdSense earnings?

The performance of my own blogs with AdSense hasn’t really been impacted too much (although today for the first time in ages my CTR is quite a bit lower and click values are down by around 40%) but from what I can tell quite a few AdSense publishers have seen significant decreases in CTR and click values for the last few days.

My Adsense Nosedive (at Digital Point), AdSense EPC Going into Freefall (Webmaster World) and Is it slow, is it the weather or is it me? (Webmaster World).

As I’ve mentioned above - it’s quite normal to see variations in earnings from day to day but perhaps something a little bigger is going on here?
